Matt Doheny is a candidate for Congress to represent New York 23rd Congressional District and is currently seeking the Republican, Conservative and Independence Party endorsements.
He is not a career politician, but someone whose experience and track record have centered on his career path in the business world. At a time when the federal government is running historic deficits and the nation is coming out of the worst recession since the depression, people in the North County, Adirondack Region and Central New York need bold new ideas. Matt has the business and finance experience needed to help turn around our nation’s economy and bring much-needed jobs to our region.
His late father was a traveling salesman whose territory covered the entire North Country for over twenty years until his untimely death in 1994. Matt’s mother Kay is a lifetime resident of Alexandria Bay and an active member in village and town governments.
The value of hard work in the North Country, the sanctity of family and the importance of service to the community were passed down to Matt at a young age directly from his parents. It is these values, and the values that he learned from his work in the private sector that Matt will use to represent the citizens of the 23rd Congressional District.
Matt attended public school and graduated from Alexandria Bay Central School in 1988. He then earned a BA in Political Science from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA where he served two years as student body president, played varsity hockey and won a Division III National Championship as part of the varsity football team.
His hard work at Allegheny College, from where he graduated Cum Laude, paid off when he was awarded a scholarship to attend Cornell Law School in Ithaca, NY. There, he received his JD in Business and Contract Law, graduating in 1995.
After practicing law for a few years at several firms including Hancock & Estabrook in Syracuse, NY, Matt decided the law wasn’t for him and went into the business world. It is in this world during the last ten years that Matt has produced a track record of great success helping large troubled companies reorganize, recover from bankruptcy, save jobs and prosper.
He worked as a Managing Director for Trouble Assets at Deutsche Bank from 2000 through 2008. Here, Matt helped purchase debt of troubled companies like Air Canada, Pacific Gas & Electric and Adelphia and assisted them in restructuring so they could once again operate independently.
In 2008, Matt left Deutsche Bank to join Fintech Advisory, where he currently works as a portfolio manager.
It’s this type of business experience that gives Matt firsthand knowledge of what it takes to bring a large company back from the brink of financial ruin, which is a skill that will be highly useful in dealing with the economic crises our country is facing today.
Matt currently resides in Watertown and Alexandria Bay.
